Birthstone of the month
June is the only month that has three birthstones: pearl, moonstone and alexandrite. Pearls are a perennial favourite and their luminous lustre looks good on all skin tones. Seawater cultured pearls develop in an oyster while freshwater pearls are formed in a mussel. Although a classic pearl is round, they can come in a variety of shapes and subtle colour variations. We love the irregularly shaped baroque pearls which are quite distinct and individual. Pearls do need to be treated carefully as perfumes and sprays can damage their nacreous layer and from time to time restringing is advised. June’s alternative birthstone, the delicately coloured moonstone which can be milky or almost transparent with pale blue glints. The third birthstone for June is alexandrite, a colour changing stone from green/blue to red/purple, depending on the light. It can be more expensive than diamonds in its natural form and as such the synthetic version is more commonly used in jewellery.
We stock a wide selection of pearl jewellery in both silver and gold in both classic and contemporary styles. Below are some photos of our moonstone collection. More examples can be found on our website
